Overview

Lumbini is the birthplace of Gautama Buddha and one of Buddhism's four most sacred pilgrimage sites, drawing travelers seeking spiritual reflection alongside history and culture. This 3-day, 2-night tour takes you from Kathmandu or Pokhara to Lumbini, with a full day exploring Maya Devi Temple, the surrounding monastic zone, and the region's UNESCO-listed heritage.

Beyond the temple itself, you'll walk through a landscape of monasteries built by Buddhist communities from around the world, learn the history behind Ashoka's pillar, and get a quieter, more reflective side of Nepal than its mountain trekking routes are known for. The tour is well suited to travelers of all fitness levels and pairs easily with a longer Nepal cultural or trekking itinerary.

Detailed Itinerary

  • Day 1: Travel from Kathmandu or Pokhara to Lumbini

Depart by private vehicle or tourist bus for the roughly 8–9 hour drive to Lumbini (around 300 km from Kathmandu, or 200 km from Pokhara). Domestic flight options are also available for travelers short on time. Check in to your hotel and rest for the evening.

  • Day 2: Full-Day Lumbini Sightseeing

After breakfast, spend the day exploring Lumbini's sacred sites — Maya Devi Temple, the exact birthplace of Buddha, followed by the Ashokan Pillar, Lumbini Museum, and the peaceful Maya Devi Pond. Continue on to the international monastic zone, home to Japanese, Chinese, and Vietnamese pagodas built by Buddhist communities worldwide. Optionally visit Tilaurakot, the ancient palace site linked to Buddha's early life. Local rickshaw hire is available for getting around the site at your own pace.

  • Day 3: Return to Kathmandu or Pokhara

After breakfast, drive back to Kathmandu or Pokhara, arriving in the evening. Tour concludes on arrival.
