Across the Bagmati River from Kathmandu, the city of Lalitpur — better known as Patan — is home to one of the finest collections of Newari architecture in the world. Patan Durbar Square, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is packed with intricately carved temples, the former royal palace, and the excellent Patan Museum, all within a compact, walkable square.
Patan has long been known as the "City of Fine Arts," and its bronze casting and wood carving workshops, many of them family-run for generations, are still active in the surrounding alleys. It's one of the best places in the valley to see traditional craftsmanship still being practiced today.
