Perched on a ridge above the Trishuli River, Manakamana Temple is dedicated to the goddess Bhagwati, believed to grant the wishes of devotees who make the pilgrimage in good faith — the name Manakamana literally means "wish-fulfilling." For centuries, pilgrims climbed for hours through the hills to reach it; today, a scenic cable car covers the journey in about ten minutes, with sweeping views over the valley and distant Himalayan peaks along the way.
The temple itself is a hub of activity, especially during festivals, with pilgrims offering flowers, red tika powder, and animal sacrifices in the traditional style. Even for visitors not making a religious pilgrimage, the cable car ride and hilltop views make it a memorable half-day trip from Kathmandu or en route to Pokhara.
