Janakpur, in the southeastern Terai, is one of Nepal's most important Hindu pilgrimage sites, believed to be the birthplace of Goddess Sita and the setting for her marriage to Lord Rama, as told in the Ramayana. The city's centerpiece is the stunning Janaki Mandir, a white marble temple built in Mughal-inspired architecture, glowing beautifully at sunset.
Janakpur is also the cultural heart of the Maithili people, known for their distinctive folk paintings, colorful festivals, and the sacred ponds scattered throughout the old city, where pilgrims bathe before visiting the temple. The Vivah Panchami festival, celebrating Sita and Rama's wedding, draws enormous crowds each year.
