At the southern edge of the Kathmandu Valley, where two rivers meet at the base of a forested gorge, Dakshinkali Temple is one of Nepal's most important shrines to the goddess Kali. Devotees come here, especially on Tuesdays and Saturdays, to make animal sacrifices in the traditional style, believed to appease the fierce goddess and bring protection and good fortune.
Even for visitors who prefer to observe rather than participate, the temple's setting — a shaded, rocky gorge filled with the sound of rushing water and ringing temple bells — makes it a striking and memorable stop. The surrounding forest and picnic spots along the riverbank are popular with local families on weekends.
