Bhaktapur, the "City of Devotees," is often described as the best-preserved of the Kathmandu Valley's three medieval royal cities. Its Durbar Square, pottery square, and network of brick-paved lanes have retained a distinctly old-world atmosphere, with far less traffic and modern development than Kathmandu or Patan.
Highlights include the 55-Window Palace, the towering Nyatapola Temple — the tallest pagoda in Nepal — and the bustling Pottery Square, where potters still shape clay on traditional wheels in open courtyards. Bhaktapur is also famous for its local delicacy, juju dhau ("king curd"), a rich yogurt worth trying at any of the square's small shops.
